Default Ekit sim and data usage - watch out! - 23-06-2011, 14:31

I was wondering why my Ekit credit disappeared so quickly when I used it a few months ago. I just had time to look into it, and the first 3 lined below explain why. LOL! I certainly did not know that my sim was data activated and I did not intentionally use data. I had the sim in my Nokia E63 and it looks like it automatically got the settings or so. It would not make sense for me to intentionally use data at these absurd rates. Especially since I had a local sim in Nigeria with excellent data rates and packages. I was only in Ghana on a 2-hour layover. I do not plan on wasting my time contacting Ekit as it likely will not get me anywhere.

Just a warning to others.

I had that happen with my E66 with a prepaid SIM. I found the culprit was Whatsapp which automatically sought out a working APN. Inventory your programs carefully.

Strike my comment about Bell. I just remembered that my E66 Nokia is only 2100mhz HSPA. My iPhone is everything, but I have ATT worldwide included data on it and haven't even bothered unlocking it. Jailbreaking yes; unlocking no.

Sorry to hear about the issues you experienced Bossman, i've sent you a PM so i can investigate this further with our technical division. Many smart phone handsets now run applications that will use data even if the customer is not directly using them, such as weather apps, fetch email, location services, ect. There is usually an option on the handset to disable data when roaming; for an ekit Sim it is 312 short code to disable data (313 to enable again).

There is a much better way to solve the problem and generate a lot of data traffic for you. Please change this:

"The minimum charge is for 100KB and usage is charged in increments of 10KB"

to this, like some other provider:

"The minimum charge is for 1KB and usage is charged in increments of 1KB."

After you do so, I can stop using my Italian SIM.

I just want to mention that the Ekit representative responded quickly and took a look at it. They also credited my account with more than what I lost due to this accidental usage.
