Lightbulb Thailand 3G update - 03-04-2012, 15:55

3G is now wide spread in Thailand however you have to check your phone for the compatibility.
The big 3 operators now offer 3G on various frequency, none offer on standard UMTS2100.

AIS 3G use 900MHz
DTAC 3G use 850MHz
Truemove-H use 850Mhz

Double check your phone compatibility before opt out for sim card.
For local call or ISD call there are no much difference between them, you can check the old topic in this forum for more info.

Moreover Truemove-H is not the same network as Truemove which is only offer 2G service (though own by same company). Many news customer encourage to apply for Truemove-H which can roam into Truemove for 2G service where 3G network is not available.

By far IMO Truemove-H offer little better of 3G service than the other, while AIS offer reliable and good voice service. DTAC is losing its reputation in the country with poor service and network down frequently.

Any question on Thai's sim card? Put it here or PM me.

Since a friend of mine recently visited Thailand I participated in a discussion on this forum concerning 3G frequencies and compatible devices. Afaik the following are the standards and frequencies currently used in Thailand, which actually includes one operator (TOT3G) using UMTS2100:

•AIS:
GSM 900, GSM 1800, UMTS 900

•TOT3G:
GSM1900, UMTS 2100

•DTAC:
GSM 1800, UMTS 850

•TrueMove:
GSM 1800, UMTS 850

According to this article an auction for 45 MHz of 2100 MHz spectrum will be held in September or October 2012, which according to this article shall be auctioned in blocks of 10 and 15 MHz and so would allow 3-4 operators (probably all existing ones) to acquire 2100 MHz spectrum.

I also was in Thailand recently and can confirm good 3G coverage with AIS in Bangkok and northeastern thailand whereas there was no 3G down in the popular tourist regions in the south.
In and around bangkok TOT works very well with 3G on 2100 MHz, they are rapidly spreading coverage to north-east and central thailand right now with very attractive data SIM cards available.
True could not be tested as i dont have a 850 MHz capable 3G device

Hello,

I am also in Thailand in huahin now..

Last Time i alias used ais.. Nowdays ais is only 1 Megabit/s 3G service..

Which is unfortunately fra to Slow for me..

I discovered that ais is offering a roaming service with tot 3G. Roaming is only possible with some packages.. This is for example 2 Gb for 650 th
But its working in huahin and 7 Mbit/s

As i Need this per Day - Quinte extensive Hobby..

Now i discovered this Theras about I had used i-mobile3GX in Bangkok, it is cheap and stable.

i-mobile3GX in Bangkok...

Now i have some questions: i have Never Seen a reseller in huahin which Sells tot 3G or imobile3gx..

Is this Operator only available in BKK?

When i have a imobile3gx Card, can i also use this Card in huahin using the Tot 3G Network??

TOT has nearly nationwide coverage now.
you can check the coverage map here:
iLocation

on this map they also show all resale outlets. I didnt have a problem to get such a SIM so far.

Hi, thanks for York qick support...

According to the hotline of i-mobile 3gx it is only possible to use this in Bangkok..

But i am here in huahin and using tot 3G Network and is working well..

But i am using a ais 12call roaming package- 2gb for 650 Thb (for roaming use with tot3g)

Here in huahin i have the following Speed:
Hotel Internet 2 Megabit/s
Ais. 2,5 Megabit
Tot3g. 8,5 Megabit

So - tot3g would be the fastest in huahin...

Could you imagine that immobile 3gx is only availabe in BKK - Even when tot3g has a Network in huahin?

The Problem for me is that the Homepage of them is completely in Thai...

I dont know if immobile 3gx also available in huahin (tot3g is available here and i already use this at superb Speed)

well i-mobile 3gx is just a reseller of TOT3G. I dont know why they tell you that its only available in Bangkok, i guess because the SIM packages can only be purchased in Bangkok. On their website they show the full TOT coverage also for their service: http://www.i-mobile3gx.com/main/3gx_usage.php (scroll down a bit for the maps)
The speed is really good as you already found out. AIS is very over-loaded in urban areas, True is better, but my phone does not support 3G on 850MHz so i couldnt use their card on 3G...
