Country:
Default 3 months in Asia (what sim to get) - 02-04-2007, 00:25

Hi

I will be traveling in asia for 3 month.
I have a quad-band gsm phone

I will go in the following countries :
china and hong kong (1 month)
vietnam 2 weeks
cambodia 1 week
thailand 2 weeks
malaysia 1.5 week
singapore 0.5 week
indonesia 2 weeks
Japan (2 days in Tokyo)

What sim card should I get to make local calls and a few calls to Canada?
Should I buy a different sim card in each of those countries?

Buying eight different SIM cards won't really be worth it. I'd recommend an international SIM card, i.e. United Mobile. With that you'd have coverage in Mainland China (I hope it's working again), Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapur and Japan (in case you can borrow a 3G-capable phone).

Active Prepaid SIMs: United Mobile; (RC) China Mobile; (USA) TúYo; (D) Loop, Callya, Simyo; (A) Klax; (I) Wind; (B) Ay Yildiz
Former Prepaid SIMs: (RC) IF; (D) Free&Easy, Xtra; (A) Yesss; (UK) Pay&Go; (E) Movistar; (IS) Frelsi
Mobiles in use: Sagem my101X, Siemens M50, Nokia 6800, Siemens M65, Motorola E770, Samsung SGH-Z500, Nokia 9500
Previous Mobiles: Nokia 5130, Motorola V3688, Sagem myX-1, Siemens M55, NEC e313, SonyEricsson T200, Motorola V980, Siemens C45, Motorola V600

thanks for the answer
With the new coverage of United Mobile I think it would be a good solution.
I also find yackie to be a good offer but is it as bad as what we can read on this site (such as most people never receive their SIM card)?

I will also use my rogers SIM card for local calls in thailand since it's cheaper than UM.

A discount SIM in Thailand is about 50 baht ($1.50). Full priced is about double that. Buy at any 7-11 any top up at any 7-11. Then grab a Hitari prepaid calling card, (also at 7-11) and call any country for cheap.
