Default 09 alternative please - 26-01-2007, 15:57

Does anyone know of a card that will positively work in germany and poland to phone the uk. My 09 card worked for a while in england to england and has not worked since, having tried switching networks. no luck. All I get is a message to ring customer services which does ring but often does not answer but that maybe due to the odd times of day I use the phone.
Any suggestions please.
Thanks

All cards should work in DE and PL to call the UK, including 09. You can try Travelsim or United Mobile or one of the many IOM-based cards... there's a list on this site and forum.

Working Prepaids: IT: Wind, Vodafone IT, UNO Mobile; SM: Prima; UK: 3, Virgin; INT: TravelSIM, Truphone.
Deceased Prepaids: CZ: Oskar, Eurotel; SK: Orange; DE: E-Plus, Aldi, Simyo; GE: Geocell; AM: Armentel; PL: Heyah, Plus; LT: Tele2; LV: Amigo; EE: Elisa; UA: Kyivstar; NZ: Vodafone; INT: UM, UM+, ICQSim.
GSM/3G Phones: Nokia Lumia 630 dual sim

But if you need a card for incoming calls too, please remember that Travelsim charges for incoming calls in Poland at 0.13€/min.

Thank you both for your advice.
So I might as well go with United - have you by any chance phoned to the UK from Poland or Germany with the card.

Cheers

I've used UM in Germany and it worked fine. I keep 09 around because it has more free incoming countries than anyone, but they need to work on their system.

I use both UM and O9 when I travel to Europe from the USA...the vast majority of my calls are back to the USA and for those I use Callbakcworld with UM and enlinea with O9.....cbw charges 14¢/minute to call from Europe to either the USA or Canada but also has cheap rates to other European destinations including the UK...enlinea works real well with O9 which I use simply to call out. I'm not too much into texting but using my US carrier, T Mobile US, allow me to text for only 35¢ internationally and to receive texts for free (at least on the plan I have!)...receiving calls on UM (have never used O9 to receive) has generally been 90 to 95% flawless although they had some sort of outage last June while I was in France...I still think somehow the French authorities were behind this but then again these days I tend to blame them for a lot of things (just joking)...sometimes the problem is simply switching the roaming partner from the one chosen automatically...for example as I remember I was having trouble receiving calls while roaming on SFR last August in Nice but as soon as I switched to Orange FR, problem was solved. (also note that you can receive calls on mobile phones while in the Paris Metro if that matters to you).

Of course, as noted, the big problem in some cases with United Mobile and many of the Estonian cards is that calls to them can be very expensive. Even voicestick charges much more to call Liechtenstein mobiles than it does to say UK mobiles...and sometimes for reasons known only to them we have seen really cheap carriers raise their rates dramatically as soon as they found out what's going on.

The way around this, at least at present, is to sign up with callbackworld for either their pin2dest US toll free number or if you want to splurge and spend $1.50/month you can get your own US toll free dedicated number and then people can call you to your heart's content by dialing the US number...and for the most part for whatever the reason in most countries rates to the USA are among the cheapest there are (Parenthetically I have seen some carriers charging outrageous amounts to call US toll free numbers...I simply don't understand this..can it be more of this block people from bypassing pricely systems????)...I do know I call US toll free numbers all the time from Europe via callbackworld and pay the 14¢ rate with no problems whatsoever (cbw is apparently based in the USA so I don't even get the lead message that calls to this toll free number are not toll free if dialed from outside the United States..."

But to me, I think I said this earlier in the thread but am too lazy to go back, as it stands right now today without using other voip the neatest quickest way to be reachable throughout most of Western and Central Europe is via United Mobile paired with CBW.

But nobody can predit what the future holds obviously and with the eu getting ready to stick its hands into the roaming quagmire, by next summer they claim they will have something in place. Time will tell.
