Default Alcatel OT 665 - unlocking - 01-06-2014, 18:39

I’ve had an Alcatel OT 665 PAYG mobile from orange.uk (now EE) for a couple of years. I would now like to unlock it; the orange.uk website quotes a fee of £20.42 and a delay for some 20 days.

Can someone pse tell me an alternative (reliable) way of getting the necessary unlocking code more cheaply and faster?

Finally, will the mobile still work on the Orange network after the unlocking if there’s still some credit left on that PAYG account?

Thank you in advance.

Check out eBay or the foneshop you will be able to get it unlocked at a much cheaper price.

Orange are remarkably slow in unlocking phones. They often take longer than their own timescales and often more than 30 days in breach of Regulation 19 of the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000. Therefore it is often possible to pay Orange upfront for an unlocking service, wait for them to exceed their quoted timescale, chase them up to unlock it and then once it is done, demand a refund under Regulation 19(2)(b).

Thanks for the replies.

I like NFH’s idea but I would like to get this unlocking underway ASAP. Following on from tamla’s suggestion, I paid 9.99 € to 'mobileunlocked.com' to have my phone unlocked. They’ve just e-mailed to say:

“Our system has just reported that the order is taking longer than the average delivery time quoted on our website. We sincerely apologise for the delay. We will be contacting our supplier for Alcatel unlocking, to speed up the process any way we can. We'll get your order completed as soon as possible.”

Not sure what to do for the best when I’m back in the UK: I currently have an Orange (now EE) package for homebroadband with free phone calls to most places. I don’t travel around much in the UK and am unlikely to need internet access for an iPhone 5. Can someone pse recommend (a) PAYG for phone calls only and (b) phone calls + occasional internet use?

Excellent. Thanks very much indeed, Donal.

I'm still waiting for the code to come through for the Alcatel but guess there's a delay because it was Sunday when I put through the order.

Donal, I know it's off-topic but do you have suggestions for France and for Germany? For the Alcatel in France, I thought I'd go for the Leclerc card and I think there's a similar deal from Aldi (or Lidl?) in Germany.

However, my wife is getting an iPhone and for this she'll want also want PAYG in F and in D. The 'Three' deal seems ideal for her in GB

Your comments would be greatly appreciated.

Hi RN7,

Yes, AldiTalk seems suitable in Germany... and you could also telephone your wife for 3c/min across Europe

Have a look at the comments made by other PrePaidGSM members:

Sorry, but I can't make any recommendations for France. I don't keep up-to-date with the french telecoms market.

All fine, Donal, and thanks very much for your help and the link. The unlocking code came through for my Alcatel earlier today.
