Default Daughter to Ecuador, This is what I plan on doing? - 07-05-2007, 19:20

Ok I first want to thank you all for leading me in the right direction with the cell phone info. My wife and I were very worry about staying in contactwith our daughter. Now I think that problem has been solved because of you all. I thank you.
Anyway this is what I plan on doing and feel free to make sugguestions.

I bought a Motorola slv 6 and a Motorola C 139. Tested both phones with T-moble sims works in us.
I am going to have her take the C 139 with her and buy a local sim. If it don't work then buy a phone there.

I don't think there phone plans offer free incoming ,so this is what I planned on doing.

Buying the cheapest international sim so she could receive free incoming. Doing this she will be able to talk to her friends from the US and family longer. I will have them call my voip (Broadvoice) and it will be forwarded to her local number.

What do you all think? Doing this I think will keep the cost down. The only thing she will have to do is take the international sim out when she wants to talk local.
I am buying the international sim because of free incoming.

The Motorola SLRv6 is for me.

Thanks.

BTW, which international sim are you buying? Also, since she may not have the international sim in the phone when she is being called from the US, some calls may be missed or roll to voice mail(if available). Another option will be to just get another phone (they are pretty cheap these days), and have the local sim in one and the international sim in the other. The disadvantage is she'll have to carry 2 phones.

I'd also learn how to use SMS (text messaging) and test it. I find SMS is a great way to keep in touch for essential messages while keeping the costs under control. Particularly good on cruise ships where it may cost $5/min to talk but $0.30 to send a text message.

Default Never thought about Text Message - 08-05-2007, 01:46

You are right that is what these kids do now, I never thought about that. If so I can pass on the international sim.

I was not sure on what international sim I was going to buy. Price was about the same for them all. I might not need it now.

Thanks

Looks as if Ecuador use 850. Your unlocked C139 should do the trick. Strange, I did not see any info here on Ecuador; used link to gmsworld.

Don't forget a calling card of some kind (ATT, MCI, etc) for her. And be sure to give her the instructions for using it like the 800 # in Ecuador.

She can theoretically SMS you her location and landline phone. I bet that will be cheaper for you to call her on the hotel phone (you don't mention where she is staying) than on the cell. Since as you write inbound is not free.

Default Help with this one: What do you think? - 10-05-2007, 14:08

Hey guys going to buy the local card .10 min and also going to buy a 09 international card for the free incoming min. Teach her how to use call back before she leaves. If it does not work I will ebay it. Also going to give her the Cingular sim that has a few min left on it for arrival.

She leaves for quito ecuador May 21 - Aug 18, 2007. Staying with a host family. Will be attending EF Language School. Has to walk 10 min to the school. She has another student living there as well, both are 17.
I contacted the host family and they speak no english! I hung the phone up.

Anyway my question is : 09 the only international sim with free incoming to ecuador? I checked them all. Also on 09 website it stated their sims runs on the freq. 0900-1900, but works in Ecuador. (Ecuador on runs on 850 freq.). A little feedback thanks.

She will be using the Motorola C139 phone. 850/1900
Thanks.

Default Should be no problem - 10-05-2007, 15:21

The freq does not depend on the SIM card, but on the capabilities of the phone. I suspect 09 is mis-informed about local frequency bands. IF they partner with a firm in Ecuador, then the frequency in use in immaterial. As long as the phone is 850 capable, she should have no problems.

My opinion. See what others say.

Like virtually every other country in the world (except U.S. and Canada), Ecuador cell users have free incoming. The cost is borne by the caller. It will cost about 25 cents/min. to call her prepaid SIM
via most discount LD carriers from U.S.
There is no need for you to get an intl. SIM. A prepaid will be MUCH cheaper.
I assume the phone you will give her is unlocked - that means free to accept any SIM, not just T-Mobile or Cingular.

Make use of T-M's UMA/wifi free calling from any place in the world with access to wifi. I use an LG G6, wife an S7)
A/o Oct 20, 2013 no need for intl prepaid as T-Mobile U.S. includes voice roaming at 20¢/min (in and out)., unlimited text (in and out), and unlimited data in 140+ countries.

My Plan -[6 lines] U.S. T-Mobile unlimited minutes (incoming and outgoing), unlimited text, fast data on each line. that $145/mo. total! . (In U.S. no surcharge for calling a cell.) If a line exceeds 2G of data in a month, pay $10 more for that line. [That only happens a couple times/year.

I would just get a local Ecuador sim as suggested already.

The cingular sim you are talking about is prepaid right? If so, it will not work there.
