E-plus Restructures Its Roaming Prices

E-Plus: New Roaming Prices beginning May 1st, 2006

Current customers can retain old roaming plans 2/14/2006

Beginning on May 1st, E-Plus will follow in the footsteps of T-Mobile and Vodafone by introducing new prices for all roaming subscribers. The new prices are broken down into 3 zones with the same price for incoming/outgoing calls as well as for outgoing int'l calls placed from the domestic E-Plus network. Up until now, the roaming prices were subject to the prices put into place by the foreign network. E-Plus added a roaming surcharge on top of the roaming cost from the foreign network.

The new "E-Plus International" plan means that roaming prices will become clearer but also more expensive. Calls placed within a roaming country wil be more expensive since the pricing will be subject to the same conditions in place for calls from a foreign network to Germany or from a foreign network to any country other than Germany.

Calls within Europe starting at 79 Cents

Calls placed from EU countries will cost 99 cents/min under the new price structure. It doesn't matter whether a call has been placed from within a foreign country, to Germany or to any other EU country. Cheaper calls billed at 79 cents/min will be available for calls placed using E-Plus' partner networks. Calls from an EU country to North America will be billed at 1,49 Euros/min and calls to all other countries will cost 2,49 Euros/min. Calls placed from within non-EU countries, the US and Canada will cost 1,49 Euros/min when calls are placed to Europe and to other North American countries. Calls to all other countries will cost 2,49 Euros/min. E-Plus charges this price for calls originating from countries outside of Europe and North America.

Incoming calls will also be more expensive

All incoming calls when roaming will cost 69 cents (instead of 55 cents). Incoming calls in North America will cost 69 cents/min. The former price was 70 cents. The only practice to remain unaffected by this price reform will be the policy of all American providers to keep on levying roaming surcharges by passing these on to the roaming customers. Calls in other countries will be billed at 1,79 Euros/min instead of the former price of 1,50.

Sending SMS messages will be billed at 39 cents/min. Receiving SMS will remain free of charge. EU GPRS usage will be charged at 59 cents/50 kb block. Non-EU countries and North American GPRS roaming will cost 79 cents/50 kb block and 99 cents/50 kb block for the rest of the world. These prices apply to WAP, Internet and MMS sending/receiving via GPRS and UMTS.

Calls from E-Plus to Europe, the US and Canada will cost 69 cents/min. The price for the rest of the world is set at 1,79 Euros/min. SMS to all countries will cost 39 cents.

Current E-Plus customers may keep their current roaming prices

As stated by E-Plus via e-mail and their monthly bill inserts back in February, March and April, all current E-Plus customers will be moved to the "E-Plus International" plan beginning May 1st. Current customers wishing to retain their grandfathered roaming plans must notify E-Plus in writing (through certified mail) or by calling the toll-free hotline at 0800-3108031. Those wanting to make sure that their request is properly handled should also respond by certified mail and certified mail receipt (which the recipient must sign and send back to the sender so they know that the mail was received).

The E-Plus Press Division also responded to teltarif.de's question about what would happen to new customers joining E-Plus after May 1st, we were informed that the new "E-Plus International" plan would apply automatically to all new customers. Current customers whose contracts are up for renewal may choose to retain their old roaming plans or to switch to the new plan.

BASE (www.base.de) customers also affected

The E-Plus Press Division confirmed that current BASE customers will also be switched over to the new plan automatically on May 1st after also being informed by e-mail and monthly bill insert. These customers will also given the choice to switch back to their old plans or to accept the "E-Plus International" plan. All new BASE customers signing on after May 1st will be bound to the "E-Plus International" plan.

Regarding E+...... just post=paid? Just E+ or also for the MVNOs? They expect this to boost their popularity and revenue?

Regarding T-MO.... I HEARD or READ they were redoing their rates, but I thought that was only POST PAID.

I think this is postpaid, it's the same move done by Vodafone Italy a couple of years ago. Prepaid E+ customers already payed fixed rates, and very expensive like these...

As far as I can tell by scouring the E-Plus site, it seems that these changes are limited to postpaid customers only for the moment. The only MVNO affected by this change is BASE. None of the prepaid E-Plus plans or MVNOs show any changes yet.
