Hello Everyone,

I purchsed a United Mobile sim card in June and used it in europe with no problem. I just got to Taiwan and I am not getting any sgnals on my phone. Can some one tell me if there is anything I need to do before using the phone here in Taiwan and then in Hong Kong? I am using a unlocked Motorola Razor that was purchased from Cingular. The same phone was used with the same sim card in France, Spain and England couple months ago with no problem.

Please help as I have no phone here and need to call my office and check my voice mail.

Thanks

The usual explanation for this is you have a US model tri band phone (however most Motorolas are quad bands that I know of)...often times when you use a tri band bought in America it comes without the 900 mhz frequency and you are in territory that is predominantly 900...so is the phone tri or quad band?

As far as I know the Razor is a quaud band but again I am not sure. I have a freind who is using his razor phonr that is also cingular and activated on cigular at this time he has reception with no problem.

How can I check and see if my phone (Razor Purchased from Cingular) is a tri band or a Quad band? Please help.

Thank you

Did you try a network selection?
The phone will display the available networks (on which he can work) and you can try to register on one of them...

Thank you for the reply. I did do network search and I got four networks that are avaialble. They are as follow:

TW Mobile
KGT-Online
chunghuwa
Far East Tone

I did add them all to my network list but still
no signal and I did register the TW mobile and still no signal.
I dont know what to do anymore.

Let me ask a question here. Is your friend using a UM sim card or a local or God forbid a Cingular sim card? Does UM even work in Tawain? You can do a manual search of the bands and put it on 900 the bands may not be on automatic. If UM doesn't work get a local sim card and put enough money on it call the office. Yes it may be expensive to call the states, but that what expense accounts are for. :P Hope my 2 cents helped.

powerlifter is more than likely correct, first make sure UM has coverage, I have a RAZR and you have to manually set the bands to 900/1800. This I guess is to supposedly cut down on the searching of networks and save battery life, while doing a search it will probably search all bands, but for it to log in you need to manually set it to 900/1800 instead of 850/1900.

UM has coverage in Taiwan through Vibo which is a 3g network. Is your phone 3g;

That's why he cannot register on the GSM networks... no roaming agreement!
The only solution is to buy a 3G phone or a local sim card.

Thank you all for your reply. I just could not get my Razor phone to work in this area. I guess Razor phone is not a 3G phone. I got a the same answer from United Mobile as Maccoy and Prion and Money69 and powerlifter. This is what I got from them:

Our provider in Taiwan is VIBO. You need a 3G mobilephone (UMTS) to be able to use it in Taiwan. Unfortunately VIBO is the only roaming provider that we got in Taiwan.

best regards
your United Mobile Customer Service

United mobile is attainable now each time for you : Immediately the
Customer service is at the disposal to you on 365 days in the year 24 hours per day.

I am leaving to Hong Kong today and then will fly to MainLand China after 4 days. Does anyone know if I will have the same problem in those areas or not.

Thank you again for all your help everyone.
