Default 4g or LTE - 17-12-2009, 06:29

The first commercial 4g networks have launched, TeliaSonera in selected cities in Norway and Sweden, just Stockholm and Oslo so far, with licences also in Finland

TeliaSonera press release

www.teliasonera.com/4g

up to 100 megabits per second, apparently, or 20 to 80, depending on source

I read about it on TechCrunch First 4G Mobile Network Launches . . . In Sweden

Quote:
TeliaSonera says it will roll out the 4G service to 25 cities in Sweden and Norway in 2010. But you know how these things go. The full rollout may take longer because they are still trying to follow the instructions on how to put it together. They are pretty sure they are missing some bolts. (We’ve all been there).

Slightly more detailed discussion on 4G network goes live for lucky few ? The Register

Quote:
LTE is a data-centric networking technology, but TeliaSonera's roll-out goes further by being data only: no LTE handsets have been announced or demonstrated, which makes sense when voice is better handled on the 3G network running at 2.1GHz.

Not that LTE has any problems carrying voice - the power of LTE lies in its flexibility which allows it to operate at hugely variable speeds and frequencies. LTE isn't just intended to extend 3G capabilities, but to replace every radio standard used in mobile telephony*.

O2 UK has announced that it's carried out its first tests in Slough

As well as those news items. there seem to be some people starting scares it would interfere with cable TV - maybe there's some misunderstanding of a few things, like frequency allocations like the 800 MHz to be released from analogue broadcast TV, or prospective 2.6 GHz bands due to be auctioned some time or other, or the likelihood of fibre optics being affected anyway.

I think 4G-technology is still in a very early stage of development. Against the background of missing terminals it's odd to promote a commercial launch, especially when basic services like voice have just recently been specified and first test calls took place only days ago. There's an very interesting blog of Martin Sauter, a telecom engineer and book author, who shares his thoughts and provides detailed explanations at: WirelessMoves

Regarding the digital dividend, 3G and 4G were proven to interfere with DVB-C and DVB-T (see Google Übersetzer). While that issue can be solved for DVB-T by narrower frequency filters in receivers, there's no other solution for DVB-C than skipping the relevant spectrum for cable broadcasting.

terminals: Samsung: Galaxy S5 DuoS (G900FD); BLU: Win HD LTE; Nokia: 1200; Asus: Fonepad 7 ME372CG; Huawei data: E3372, Vodafone R201, K3765, E1762;
postpaid: O2 on Business XL; prepaid: DE: Aldi Talk, Lidl; UK: 3; BG: MTel, vivacom; RU: MTS; RS: MTS; UAE: du Tourist SIM; INT'L: toggle mobile
VoIP: sipgate.de (German DID); sipgate.co.uk (British DID); ukddi.com (British DID); sipcall.ch (Swiss DID); megafon.bg (Bulgarian DID); InterVoip.com

I missed this earlier

Digital Dividend could cost cable TV dear ? The Register

The EU is to investigate claims that 4G mobile networks could knock out cable TV, if allowed to deploy in the "Digital Dividend" spectrum.
[...]

Today's LTE networks (well, network, there's only one right now) are right up at 2.6GHz, well clear of TV signals, but after the auctions LTE is expected to spread rapidly down the dial.
