PeterStar to launch WiMAX network in Kaliningrad soon

ST. PETERSBURG, June 2 (Prime-Tass) -- Russia's PeterStar, a St. Petersburg-based alternative fixed-line operator, plans to launch a WiMAX network in the city of Kaliningrad in late 2006 or early 2007, the company said in a press release Friday.

In the future the company plans to launch the network in some other Russian cities, the company said.

PeterStar has already invested U.S. $1.2 million since February in the creation of its telecommunications network in Kaliningrad, the company said. PeterStar has built a fiber optic and copper cable network 80 kilometers long in the city, the company said.

PeterStar was established in 1992 and provides local telephony and data transmission services in St. Petersburg and other cities of Russia's Northwest Federal District.
