Default Virgin UK charging local rates for GPRS roaming - 13-06-2009, 08:12

Are they running a special or so? I was in Paris for a couple of days, and in Nigeria now. I noticed that all my data usage has only been charged for 30p for each day of usage. I know. this is the rate for UK usage, but wondering if they extended this for roaming just for the summer or so. I did not see anything on their website.

What is considered (in practical rather than contract terms) "mobile web access" under this plan?

Not sure about the answer. I just know that so far I am being charged 30p per day. I am sure there is a limit, but I am sure I will not come any where close to it.

Was this in a phone or dongle, or both?

Aboot an hour ago, I just tried, after reading you response below, via using my phone as a modem (tethering). I am assuming that is also called dongle. I sitll was not charged besides the daily 30P.

interesting that it's ok while using phone as modem, but by dongle, I actually meant one of those USB plug-in modem things, of which I have a couple on order for fairly daft promotional prices

is your account pay as you go only, or a contract with a direct debit? I'm just wondering if a contract one has some delays in the billing coming through, like roaming calls do

anyway, I'll be abroad soon, and might have to take a couple of Virgin SIMs with me, and maybe an old 3g datacard to play with on a friend's laptop

My account is payg. So far, I have been charged 30p/day for my 6 days that have used it here and 2 days in Paris. Its probably something with their system that it thinks I am using it within the UK. BTW, both my usage via the mobile and as a modem has been with my blackberry 8310 curve. So, I am not sure if it makes a difference.

Also, did you at any point have to enable roaming, or did you just buy the sim then use it in paris?

I actually incurred a 3 MB charge a couple of days ago, when I exceeded the 25 MB limit...sister did a little bit too much surfing while hooked up to my laptop. I was charged 15 pounds for that overage. I thether daily but watch it closely.

No. I did not activate anything. AFAIK, all virgin UK, and most other UK sims are data enabled by default. I have had the sim for at least 5 years, and it has been data enabled since day 1. Heck! My MTN Nigeria sim is data enabled, and I was going to sign up for the daily plan of 50 MB for $3, until I realized I was only being charged 30P per day by virgin.
