Default Best global coverage/service for SMS only? - 24-12-2008, 21:54

Can anyone suggest the best *reliable* prepaid card for SMS only? I'm planning to travel by bicycle for a for years. I will have a battery and charging system onboard and integrated will be a device like this http://bofan.cc/product_336_GPS-Personal-Tracker.html (I haven't settled on a device yet, though)

I'll be travelling through UK, Europe, Middle East (Turkey, Iran, Pakistan), Asia (India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia) and finally Australia.

The device will only be used in case of emergency, or to hopefully locate my bicycle if it is stolen. Therefore cost per SMS is really not an issue, but reliability and coverage is.

At the moment 09 looks like the best choice... Any suggestions?

Based on what's happened with 09 recently, you definitely don't want to rely on it. I would actually recommend a SIM based on the Israeli Orange system, like the one offered by MaxRoam, assuming it works in Iran. Has anyone tried that?

Maxroam does not have coverage in Iran

You may need to have a couple of SIMs to be guaranteed to have coverage in any given place.

United Mobile's products seem quite good. The company has been very reliable.

TravelSIM seems reasonably good also (I have an AirBalticcard which is a related product). I haven't used it outside North America yet though.

CA: SaskTel, Wind postpaid; Rogers, Bell postpaid iPad flex plans; US: T-Mobile postpaid data, prepaid voice; PureTalk (AT&T MVNO) prepaid voice/data; AT&T prepaid iPad plan

Hardware: Too much but notably iPhone 5, iPad Mini Retina LTE, Moto G LTE (N.A. version), iPhone 4. All unlocked.

If cost is no object, I suggest Mobal.
