I like vodafone because the account can be managed nicely on the website for each of the places (countries) I travel. Is there good website account management for the other carriers in Italy?

It depends on your needs. Every carrier (except Tiscali Mobile) has its own customer area

They did it once for me, Effendi, which is why I gave the tip above - it was about 1 month past expiration, just like Ray's. It's worth a try, at least.

Yeah, maybe in some special situation they can do, but isn't it faster to buy a new one rather than spending time calling 190 (which is not free outside of Italy), hoping to find someone speaking English and who can really help you?
And all of that to get the most expensive options in Italy... IMHO it's not worth.
