Default iPhone Hot-Spot feature - 11-03-2011, 23:49

Greetings. I'm travelling to Italy in just over a week, and I was planning to keep in touch with my iPhone 4. But I'm tempted to also bring a wi-fi only iPad (for my ageing eyes), and use the iPhone's new Hot-Spot feature to connect it to the Internet. I hope to buy a prepaid SIM when I arrive.

Does anyone know which carriers support the Hot-Spot feature? Any other advice?

Thank you.

I don't have an iPhone, but my HTW Wildfire has the hot-spot app too and it works with any provider. But I'd go with some plan which uses the web APN and not the wap APN since they could understand you are using it for tethering... So Wind would be good, for example.

Effendi, thanks for the reply. The iPhone Hot-Spot feature has to be enabled by the relevant carrier, so I guess I need to find out who does that. It was only released a week ago, and there doesn't seem to be anything about it on the carrier Web sites -- at least, that I can understand with my near-non-existent Italian.

Thanks, but I'm not inclined to jail-break for this, especially as there appears to be no need.

For anyone interested, I ended up getting a TIM SIM and signing up for the 2 Euro/week plan. It worked fine as a hot-spot for my iPad.

I see the tethering worked, that is something I was wondering for me. I also noticed you said you did not want to jailbreak your phone. Are Australian iPhone unlocked? I'm from the US and I think I'm going to have to unlock my iPhone so it works in Italy. Does anyone now if that is true?

Thanks sstanley for the follow up on how your experience went.
