Default Italy USB Modem and Skype - 07-08-2010, 17:23

Hello everyone. Thanks for offering this great resource!

I'll be headed to Naples for work at the end of August for about two weeks. I'll need good, reliable internet access so I think one of the USB modem options will work best for me, along with one of the data-heavy plans. Those plans are covered elsewhere, so I do not need an explanation of those.

Occasionally I would like to make phone calls via Skype. Do any of the carriers specifically block VoIP traffic? I've seen notes that it is usually not supported, but that does not mean that it's specifically blocked.

Does anyone have any specific recommendations on which modem to use and carrier for Skype compatibility? If I had to guess, I would think most carriers should have good coverage in Naples as long as VoIP is not blocked.

Thanks!
Mark

I think that practically no provider blocks VoIP.
Wind on the Internet No Stop option says Voip will be billed extra, but they never did it. Vodafone also says Voip is not allowed, if I'm not wrong.

Thanks for the info. I doubt that most carriers will block Skype since many smartphones are now using the Skype mobile application.

I'm also considering simply tethering my unlocked Blackberry 9530 (Storm).

The wide spread of Skype on handsets is exactly the reason why operators block Skype, as it cannibalizes voice revenues.
