Smile Updates for Brazil - general - 12-04-2009, 02:15

Hi, this is a nice website. I came across looking for 3G prepaid data plans to use on my trip in May/June to Italy/Switzerland/Finland. Found for both Italy and Finland via this site.

As I am from Brazil I checked the info on Brazil and an update is necessary. Lots of things have changed around here.

General:
  • Oi has acquired Brazil Telecom. Now Oi covers the states: Rio de Janeiro, EspÃ*rito Santo, Minas Gerais, Bahia, Sergipe, Alagoas, Pernambuco, ParaÃ*ba, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, PiauÃ*, Maranhão, Pará, Amazonas, Amapá, Roraima, BrasÃ*lia (Distrito Federal), Acre, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Rondônia, Santa Catarina and Tocantins.
  • VIVO is missing from the list. It is a large telecom company, mainly in Sao Paulo state and it provides prepaid plans.
  • Vivo has acquired Telemig Celular.
  • CTBC - Regional operator is missing.
  • Oi has acquired Amazonia Celular.
  • Claro now covers Minas Gerais.

It is very easy now to buy prepaid SIM cards, they are available, mostly from OI, at newsstands and many other places. There is no need to present a CPF , however in the first call the call is intercepted and the user must key in a CPF. That part on how difficult is to buy prepaid SIMs in Brazil can be removed.

All mobile operators now offer WCDMA/3G services. The frequencies for each company/state are available here.3G no Brasil | Mosquito Eletrônico . To make a long story short it can be abbreviated as
  • OI /Brasil Telecom - 2100 MHz
  • Claro - 850/2100 MHz
  • TIM - 850/2100 MHz
  • Vivo - 2100 MHz
  • CTBC - 850 MHz
  • Sercomtel - 850 MHz

Default Update for Brazil - Operator : TIM - 12-04-2009, 02:42

The page for TIM Brazil can be updated with the following information:

TIM offers prepaid mobile broadband. Price is R$5.00 for 24 hours access , max traffic 250 Mbytes , until 30/04/2009. From 01/05/2009 it is R$10.00.
To activate you should send a message to 4141 with "TWDIA" wait for the reply message and then reply with a confirmation message "TWDIA OK"
Off-bundle data price is R$1.05 per MByte.

International Calls prices:
Can be checked here:
TIM in the second option "Pré-pago" (prepaid)

International roaming for prepaid customers:
TIM - Você, sem fronteiras
The agreements are detailed here TIM - Você, sem fronteiras

The recharge validity has changed, the higher the amount the longer the validity.

The call plans are the same for ALL the states, but the value of taxes is different, so the final values are different by a few cents in each state.

To receive SMS while in international roaming with a Brazilian prepaid SIM it is free. To send a SMS the price is R$1.99

Smile Update for Brazil - Operator : OI - 12-04-2009, 03:03

The page for OI can be updated with the following information:

Flat rate plan name: Oi Cartão Qualquer hora
All local calls (landline and mobiles) R$1.37 /min

Peak/off peak plan name: Oi Cartão Tarifa reduzida
Peak:
To landlines and other Oi mobiles: R$1.86 /min
To other operators' mobiles: R$2.02 / min

Off-peak:
To landlines and other Oi mobiles: R$0.75 /min
To other operators' mobiles: R$0.97 / min

Peak/off peak times:
Oi Cartão Total Manhã: Off-peak: 08:00 to 12:00
Oi Cartão Total Tarde: Off-peak: 12:00 to 16:00
Oi Cartão Total Noite: Off-peak: 16:00 to 20:00
Oi Cartão Total Supernoite: Off-peak: 20:00 to 24:00

The prices on the website are for calling from public phones using the mobile phone credits (weird but true). The price conversions from BRL to EUR are also incorrect on the same page and section , all convert to EUR 0.052

The national roaming can be clarified that no roaming surcharges applies when in another state that has got Oi or Brasil Telecom coverage.
