I used "search", but really didn't find what I was looking for. I am going to Riviera Maya, Mexico in June and was wondering what my best option would be for prepaid sim card. I have a spare, unlocked, Moto Razr v3. I was planning on using it w/ the card and leaving my current phone here in the U.S.

I don't think it matters because I'm leaving my new phone here, but my carrier here is Cingular.

thanks,
mark c.

You'll have to forgive the newb here, but do you purchase those online here, or look for them in Mexico? Also, is it as simple as popping the sim into the phone and going?

thanks

Get it in Mexico. Yes, as long as your phone is unlocked, just pop it in and you are all set.

You will find the coverage for either carrier to be better than what is shown on the maps.

Cool. Thx dr. I was also told, depending on how much talk time I actually need (+ or - 30min being the magic number?), that it can be cheaper by not using the prepaid sim and going w/ a regular calling card instead? Does that sound right to anybody?

Perhaps I misunderstand, but I think you have 2 different items.

(1) Calling card to dial out is almost always cheaper than mobile. BUT you cannot be reached on a calling card AND you need land line to use it.

(2) Mobile works anywhere (with service); you can be reached; you don't need landline; is most likely more expensive.

Take or have both. I always do. Use the most convenient and economical choice you have.

Ah yes. Two diff. items is correct, thanks. Having both sounds like a good idea. I know that we will be doing the calling back to the U.S. just to check on our son, but being able to be reached for emergencies is not a bad idea. Thanks again.
