What about using a calling card? Or get a local prepaid sim if you have a phone that works here.

I have a tri-band phone (nokia n72), so I only need a prepaid sim card to call Italy.

Thanks

Usually I would recommend ebay for the prapaid sim since they are a whole lot cheaper there. But that will not help you now, so go to a walmart, kmart, target etc. and get a prepaid kit (tmobile or cingular). It will come with an okay phone and some credit. You can also buy topup credit at the store or topup via the phone or online with your credit card (at least with tmobile).

prepaids at walmart.

You still will not want to dial your friends & family DIRECTLY with the prepaid cell. That will run 99 US cents per minute or so. Buy a calling card, ATT, MCI or if you have a credit card, you might try onesuite or enjoyprepaid. The rates there will be more reasonable. TRUE, if you use the cell phone as the only means to dial, you will pay the US domestic rate (say 20 cents per minute plus the overseas rate on the card - say 10 cents to Italian land line, 30 cents to Italian cell phone)

Don't know where you are staying, but if you have land line access for free, you can use the 800 (toll free) #s on the calling card and avoid the cell phone domestic charges altogether.

And what about "Jolt Mobile" and "Boost Mobile"? It's possible to buy only sim-card?

No idea or experience with either Boost or Jolt. Sorry.

You can buy a Boost starter on Ebay. Not sure about Boost international rates. Cannot imagine they are low.

Currently there are no Jolt starter sets for sale on Ebay US. They seem to have coverage in CA. Not clear to me how you sign up or if you can simply purchase a SIM card alone. Seems to me you need to buy a starter set WITH phone.

As I recall, Boost is a Nextel reseller. Nextel uses a proprietary protocol called iden. I might be wrong again, but I think phones are expensive and outside of a handful of countries, they would be useless.

Make use of T-M's UMA/wifi free calling from any place in the world with access to wifi. I use an LG G6, wife an S7)
A/o Oct 20, 2013 no need for intl prepaid as T-Mobile U.S. includes voice roaming at 20¢/min (in and out)., unlimited text (in and out), and unlimited data in 140+ countries.

My Plan -[6 lines] U.S. T-Mobile unlimited minutes (incoming and outgoing), unlimited text, fast data on each line. that $145/mo. total! . (In U.S. no surcharge for calling a cell.) If a line exceeds 2G of data in a month, pay $10 more for that line. [That only happens a couple times/year.

Hi Matt you can try onesuite.com

I'm using onesuite for calling my parents back in the Philippines and used it twice for calling a friend in Italy and sometimes using it too for making long distance calls within the U.S. Their rates are 3 cents per minute calling a landline in Italy. You can use your own cellphone or landline in the U.S.

No roaming cost here because you need to dial onesuite access number first in CA before dialing the destination number.

Check onesuite.com or call their 24/7 customer support at 1-866-4178483
