Default Best German PP SIM for keeping alive, cheaply outside of Germany - 25-09-2010, 15:38

Title says it all really.

My situations is this :
* Not German
* Rarely visit Germany
* No German bank account or credit card
* No friends/family/contacts in Germany

Looking for German PrePay SIM that (in no particular order)
* can be topped-up remotely
* has roaming enabled
* can receive SMS internationally free-of-charge
* has credit with long-life or does not expire
* has low requirements to keep SIM alive (top-ups,receive/make calls/sms)
* has low cost top-ups available

Thanks in advance

I don't know of any country-specific prepaid accounts that don't require you to do something whether that's add a top-up or make a call by a specified time. Most European SIMs roam internationally (albeit quite expensively outside the EU.) AFAIK all European SIMs receiving SMS is free. Sending costs (and costs considerably more if you send an SMS from a foreign country.) I don't know about T-Mobile DE but other T-Mobile's such as NL or UK you don't need to add top-ups unless the account has been completely depleated and then you have 90 days to make a top-up deposit. If you have money in the account just make a chargeable to the account every six months (either send an SMS or place a voice call either outgoing or incoming.) Some operators the expiry is 12 months, but you'll need to add a top-up to the account or the account will be deactivated.

Just checked prepaidgsm.net and ll the operators have a 12-month expiry except for one MVNO which has a six month expiry.

Also, if you get extra top-up vouchers you can usually call the customer service line and give the representative your voucher number and they will apply it to your account.

Current SIMs:

T-Mobile US (prepaid)
T-Mobile NL (prepaid)
Fido CA (prepaid)
Orange IL (prepaid)

I use a Solomo Pro SIM

Pro: (from your list)

* Can be purchased and topped up online with a non-German credit card
* Is good for 13 months after last top up
* Roams well in the EU
* Minimum €5 top up

Con:
* Only delivered to German addresses

Unknown:
* Cost of receiving SMS -- I think it is free outside of Germany but I am unsure.

Whole bunch of SIMs, mostly dead, some still working...

For the SMS question, a EU sim roaming inside the EU does not pay any charge for incoming sms following the EU regulations.
