You can buy special "long life" SIM-cards which are recommended for tourists or people who need only receiving calls.
They get 365 days validitiy with a 300 baht recharge but have higher minute rates for outgoing calls.

I'll ask my friend about that too. He'll send me a SMS as soon as he got to get you a refill card. He's very busy at work these days (working in a dept. store and they have "winter sale" )...
