If you were on a business trip very likely you had wifi for free at corporate locations. Besides, you can sign up for one of those wifi providers which offer like one-month or so access, in locations such as airports, convention centers and so.
In Rio de Janeiro the Oi Telecom provider offers free wifi in the tourist areas.
But if you are going a bit off this track it is very advisable (and also cheap) to get a prepaid SIM card just to not be disconnected for long. Well, it depends also on your internet addiction/craving !
