Although I live in China (originally from Britain) i'm not sure I have much to add to the expert stuff outlined above. However one problem I came across was when I tried topping up my pay-as-you-go China Unicom card. I was visiting Beijing one time and bought a card but I was unable to use it as you have to buy a card in the city your number is from. For me this would have meant a 3 hour flight south west!! After many hours trying to sort this out (customer service is extremely low here) the best they could do was promise a refund of the money and suggested I call a friend in the city where I live and get them to add the number.

My card is supposed to be a national number and I can use it anywhere I have been in China but I can only top it up in my city. So if you are travelling in China plan for this.
