If the phone is unlocked, you should be able to put ANY SIM in and have it work. If you have a non-VODA SIM (T-MO, ATT, etc), put it in and see what happens. If the phone asks you for a subsidy code, it is LOCKED. If the phone registers on a network, it is unlocked. There MAY be some incompatibilities with the Riiing/UM card and your phone, but that is rare.

I would IMAGINE UM will send the card purchased online to USA. If you do Ebay, there are at least 2 sellers of UM cards being offered now. TRUE, one of the sellers is BRAND NEW with 0 feedback. There is also one seller of a UN-knockoff call ECOWORLD. I think you will get a better deal on Ebay, but I may be wrong.
