The best option in Ireland for visitors is Meteor. thanks for the answer. i based my (uninformed) choice simply on availability on ebay, needing to have some family members have usability immediately upon landing (i am not accompanying them). i will warn them of the slow speed. the voice rates were compelling also.
i am able to top-up at €5 using the website.
i will keep Meteor in mind for any future needs - thanks again for replying.
