I have trimmed five SIMS using a cutter, from MINI (2FF) to MICRO (3FF), all without problems. The problem is with NANO (4FF) because they are also thinner.

Here's an update...

I used http://www.rechargemysim.de/ and relucatantly paid the fee to top up from abroad. Once I had credit, I was able to call *124*4242# and top up using the scratch off card...
