LIDL mobile scraps roaming rates within EU+Switzerland

All LIDL mobile prepaid SIM cards (running on o2 network in germany) can now be used in Europe without roaming cost.
inbound calls are free,
outbound calls within all EU+Switzerland countries 9ct/min (30/1 billing)
SMS 7ct
data 23ct/MB

all roaming bundles can still be booked.

Well. They use the same trick like Aldi talk for data.

They set the default rate ridicuosly high: € 0.23 per MB.
That's exactly at the EU/EEA cap in Germany € 0.20 plus taxes.

Then they can claim to sell data at the same rate domestically as abroad.
No lie and good advertising to fool unaware customers.

And the trap is laid out: € 0.23 per MB means € 230 for 1 GB.
Of course at home everybody buys packages. Here Lidl sells 1 GB for less than 12 €.
Crossing the border, Lidl charges 20 times as much.

But two points to the credit for Lidl:
- Aldi (their big rival on the German discounter market) did it first and Lidl just copies it
- both are still offering the 150 MB EU roaming pack for 5 €. So 1 GB comes down from € 230 to € 35 if you rebook the pack for 7 times. Still, one of the best offers for roaming on the German market.

So this is nothing new, the Ortel rate 2 threads below really is.

yes, it is nothing new but a good news for all users of Lidl mobile or to users who need a card on o2 network.
The ortel offer of course is great for frequent travellers or people with heavy usage.

For normal travellers the .23€/MB is not too bad if you control your data usage. I often use these rates on business travel and i can go well with 1-2 MB on a day for instant messaging and outlook sync on the phone.

I should move my GSM gateway with its Lidl SIM to outside Germany where I would get cheaper rates for calls to foreign mobile networks than from Germany (9 vs 29 ct/min).

What is the reason to still operate a GSM gateway? There are many VoIP providers that offer calls to most mobile networks at somewhere between 2 and 5 ct/min with best quality and any number of simultaneous calls (Voicetrading...).

The point of still operating a GSM gateway for me is a Lidl SIM card with some € 300 of credit accumulated through their referral programme. ;-)

very good point indeed ;-)
