Doodad • Joke of the Day

DOODAD "is an international SIM card that gives simple, cheap data roaming in 54 countries (and growing) at great, flat rates."

Cheap? Compared to what?
Quote:

30¢/MB: USA, South Korea, Australia

60¢/MB: China, Canada, UK

90¢/MB: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, French Guiana, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Guadeloupe, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Martinique, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden

$1.20/MB: Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Panama, Samoa, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Turks & Caicos
Europe at 90¢/MB ($900/GB) is cheap?

(I suppose compared to what Canadian carriers charge for roaming it is... )

Well,------the SIM is free [$3 shipping!]

I thought this post was spam. But no, it is about financial disaster.
Thanks for bring this to our attention.

Just curious, what is a good Prepaid data rate in Canada for data?

Not a lot of choice. You can get a SpeakOut or PetroCanada SIM for $10, load some money into it and get what they call "Unlimited Mobile Browsing" for $10/month. UMB lets you browse, e-mail and a few other things but it's not unrestricted data. So VoIP won't work for example. (You get around most of that with a proxy or VPN...)

But my reference to Canadian carriers and foreign roaming fees was intended to make Doodad's pricing look good. See e.g.
Dad gets $22,000 data roaming 'shock' from Fido and
Dad talks $22,000 cellphone roaming charge down to $200

These sorts of charges aren't unusual when Canadians take their carrier-locked phones outside Canada.

$0.90 per MB is certainly *NOT* cheap by any stretch of the imagination!

I am guessing that his SIM is using a US Roaming Profile - hence the ridiculously high data costs!
