Spain in 2008: best SIM for a 10-14 day stay?

Although nothing is booked thus far for 2008, I am hoping to make it a year of plentiful trips; one of which being a visit to Spain to see family in Barcelona and Sevilla.

The last time I was there (September 2005) was prior to me knowing about this great site. Consequently I just waded into the first phone shop I came to (Vodafone) on my first morning there and bought a SIM with some credit for €20 (from what I can remember).

I had no problems and everything worked ok although my credit ran to virtually nothing after the first week of two, so I'm pretty sure I didn't take the best option!

So, I am wondering what would be the best option this time?

I'm interested in Yoigo mainly because there's a good chance I may need to use a little data and because it already has €20 of credit. Having said that, data is not the main priority and from I can see from the information in the National Operators section, some of the new MVNOs look like they have quite good rates.

I'd be delighted to receive advice from anyone here that either lives in Spain or has knowledge/experience of the various operators/offers.

if you want to use internet I think that Yoigo is the number 1. You can buy it on ebay.es

There's a 60 for 1 minutes option on Vodafone, useful with callthrough like maybe DialNow, or Lebara has cheap direct-dialled int'l calls

Do you know whether it's available in shops or is it online-only? I could probably get one of my family members to purchase one for me...

possible to buy at tph store or carrefour or...

Hi,

I'll be in barcelona in just a few days, from the us (and stay just for a few days). Is it possible to buy a yoigo sim card at a shop without a spanish tax id or EIN? Can I use my US passport number when registering for a card? Unfortunately I don't have the time to purchase online and then have shipped.

Thanks

i don't know if a dealer will request you a EIN or a spanish tax id... hope that some spanish can help us!

This was my experience with YOIGO earlier this year. Unless something has changed, i only needed my passport to buy.

I hope that's the case for non EU folks as well. One more question--how do you add value? Can you buy a top up card where you scratch off a code and either call or sms to get more credit, or do you need to link your sim to a bank or credit card?

Thanks,

Jordan
