I see a lot of Moto V980s on ebay for less than US$100. This is a tri-band (900/1800/1900) plus +WDCMA-2100 flip phone. I'm thinking of replacing my A835 for roaming in Japan and was wondering if this is an opportunity to get a slick phone at a low price, or to blow my cash on a phone no one wants?

I think it could be a decent solution for A835 users, but surely it's a phone I won't buy. The usual Motorola menu interface, the usual iTap and phone which really had little success here. Anyway it's cheap. But if you are looking for a W-CDMA I'd search for the Sony Ericsson V800 which you can find at quite cheap rates as well. Or the K608i (unlocked and unbranded) like I just bought, which is IMHO a great phone.

In other words, the only thing really wrong with it is that it has the typical Motorola user interface?

No, there's more: it's big, heavy, and the battery life is very poor. Mine lasts about two days if it isn't moved (and that's with good UMTS reception).

It's also quite problematic to use it as a mobile broadband modem: In my experience, Moto Phone Tools seems to have big problems communicating with it, something due to poor drivers for the phone.
