There are around 420 Hofer shops in Austria, so you'll have no problems.
Just go to www.hofer.at >> Filialstandorte and type your place.

Unlocking your beloved Huawei surely is one way, but the Hofer Yesss! offer:
(see www.yesss.at)

Huawei E1552 Komplett-Paket

yesss! Internet Daten-SIM-Karte + inkl. 2 GB GRATIS Datenvolumen + entsperrtes Huawei E1552 USB-Modem + gratis yesssica!

EUR 54,99

includes free unlocked (=entsperrtes) modem, SIM and 2GB (valid for 1 year after activation) for €54,99.

512MB on a single SIM are already €9,99, so think about spending time, hassle and money for postage and unlocking.

Unlocking should also be possible here: www.online-unlock.com

Indeed. We usually stay in the Zillertal. I see there is a Hofer shop in Zell am Ziller. Also the yesss! coverage list includes nearby communities Haizenberg and Mayrhofen so we should be able to get service.

I have already spent €55 for the Drei package. It is worth spending another €5 or €10 to see if I can unlock the E1550 plus €10 for 512MB rather than spend another €55 for a new full package, especially if I can unlock the E1550 without the need to send the hardware to the unlocker service.

Even better, I may be able to use the E1550 in Canada and the US if I can find a service provider that does not require a minimum one year contract as all the major Canadian carriers do. (You Europeans have it so much better )

There's no need to pay money to unlock most Huawei USB sticks. Here's a link to a free unlock code calculator. I used it to unlock my E1550.

Yobb GSM Blog: Free Huawei Calculator!

1. Type your IMEI number into the calculator.
2. Generate a NCK unlock code.
3. Insert a "foreign" SIM into your locked USB stick. ("Foreign" means from any carrier other than the one to which the stick is locked.)
4. Start Huawei's generic Mobile Partner software.
5. At the prompt type in the unlock code.
