Has anyone else heard that or is it just a press gag?

Haven't heard anything about this but it wouldn't surprise me if they rolled out new telecom services to compete with all the new callback sim cards that have been introduced in the last year or two.
Their rumored services sounds to me a lot like the Skype service that's owned by eBay. Have tried Skype-Out but sometimes the voice quality isn't the best or I can't get touch-tone pass through to work once I get a connection.
What I would really like to see with United Mobile is GPRS data and MMS message data services, but I'm not holding my breath...
