1. I understand that users in the EU can now roam on each others networks at reasonable rates.
2. It wasn't too many years ago that users in the U.S. paid a lot of money just to roam outside their local area. You paid a lot for long distance just within the U.S. Now, users in the U.S. can go anywhere within the country and call anywhere within the country FREE. Unlimited cell calling in the U.S. is less than $100. (In the U.S., cell phones work like land lines, no extra charges to call a cell phone.)
I think, sometime in the near future, roaming between countries will be seamless. Many companies already own stakes in several countries (Vodafone, TMobile et al). We can already use 3rd party routing to call from country to country for only a few cents (pesos, sheckels).
3. There is now a service from Sprint in the U.S. where you can get unlimited data via wifi over their 3G network. You get a small "wifi card" (a little bigger than a pack of cigarettes) and can connect up to 5 devices to its wifi signal as long as they are within 10 meters. Seems to me you could make use of that to make voice calls. No contract is required. You can just pay for it for the months you need service. Seems to me visitors from overseas could make good use of this.
4. We just returned from 2 weeks in Argentina, Brazil and Uraguay. We made good use of T-Mobile (U.S.) UMA feature that allows you to make calls just as though you were standing in the U.S. Rogers, Canada has the same feature. (I think a couple countries overseas have this.) With wifi getting almost universal (like all McDonalds<G>), roaming for free is quite easy. Expensive hotels still charge an extra high fee for accessing wifi, but moderate and lower end hotels have it for free. Many restaurants had free wifi.

Bottom line - I felt no need to get prepaid SIMS. I did pay TMobile the 66 cents/day for the 2 weeks to get/send unlimited email via our BlackBerrys. We also made use of the BB free message system to keep in touch if we got separated.

For visitors to the U.S. = look into Sprint's unlimited data service. Also, T-Mobile has unlimited prepaid calling for $40/mo. That, with GoogleVoice would let you call home for 2-3 cents/min. to most first world landlines.

Hello to everyone,

I need an advice from you: UM has closed and now the sim is no more running.

I'd like to replace it with another prepaid card. I don't travel so often and If i do that I stay allways in Europe but I was using the UM card to call my friends who lives in USA and Europe and to receive calls from them.

Since I have to change company, let's see if there's one that can meet my needs:

Basic needs:

- Free incoming calls in Italy and EU
- No expiration date.
- Reasonable fees for outgoing call (main destinations are EU and North America, but if they are cheaper also in other countries it's not disliked)

I'd like if (but is not essential):

- The company will not go out of business in a week
- The card will offer a reasonable data plan, I've a smartphone with gprs and an HSDPA modem for the notebook

I've already a Travelsim (Estonian one) so I'd like to buy a sim from another Company

Thanks

I do not think most folks here use Telna. I just received this from them.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear telna Mobile customer,

the telna Mobile service has been temporarily suspended a few days ago without warning by the overseas wireless services supplier we were using as part of this product. Our attempts to have the service reinstated by the supplier have failed so far, the supplier seems to be unable to do so due to financial difficulties. We would like to inform you, our valued customers, of the steps we are taking:

- effective immediately, customers are no longer able to use their existing telna Mobile SIM card. Your telna Mobile phone number and voicemail however, will remain active, so that when someone calls your telna Mobile phone number, they will still reach your voicemail, and voicemail messages can be retrieved online or received as email attachments
- over the last year, telna has been hard at work getting licensed as a US wireless operator and building its own wireless infrastructure, in order to control the telna Mobile service from start to end, thus increasing the coverage and adding text messaging and data service capabilities. Unfortunately, this new service is still weeks away from launch.
- when the new service is ready for launch, all customers will receive a replacement SIM card. This SIM card will use the same phone number as the one currently assigned to you. As a courtesy, we will be able to overnight the replacement card to you anywhere in the world if necessary.
- for existing customers, we will waive the annual fee for the next year of telna Mobile service as a gesture for the inconvenience caused by this sudden loss of service
- please note that all other telna services are unaffected, notably our free travel-card which allows you to place inexpensive calls from 67 popular travel destinations.
For the avoidance of doubt, the only affected service "telna Mobile" is the service where telna provides you with a SIM card allowing you to be reachable on a mobile phone in 174 countries around the world.

We realize that some customers are currently traveling, and particularly affected by the sudden loss of reachability. To help these customers as much as possible, we recommend the following course of action: you should purchase a local prepaid SIM card in the country where you are currently located (usually available for under $10), and we will forward your US (or Canadian) telna Mobile phone number to your new foreign number free of charge for the duration of your stay. This will ensure that you remain reachable even if you forwarded your US based cellphone to your telna Mobile number prior to your departure. To setup this feature, please contact customer service with the phone number to which you would like your calls to be forwarded.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by these events outside of our control, and assure you that we are working hard to prevent a similar situation from occurring in the future. You will hear from us again as soon as your replacement SIM card is ready to be mailed out.

We thank you for your understanding and for your patience.

Best regards,

The customer service
