Hello all,

I'm currently in Hamburg, Germany and am looking for some advice re prepaid SIM.

I am a US citizen, and I don't have a German/European bank account, though US credit cards. I would like to get a prepaid micro SIM card for my Verizon Galaxy S3(*).

I visit Germany once a year or every 18 months, and I would like to be able to be able to keep the same number if possible (ie. have a card that doesn't expire automatically after 6 months or a year). I don't have a problem adding some nominal amount of money to the card via the internet+credit card every once in a while from the US if that helps keep it alive so that I can use the same number on my Verizon S3 in Hamburg when I come back to Germany. I don't use my phone that often while here, but I do want to be reachable and make calls every once in a while.

I bought a Tchibo card, but it turned out to require a German bank account for the "Freischaltung" of the SIM card. Since I tore open the package I doubt I can return it (?)

Can anyone recommend an easy and hopefully cost-effective solution? I think the going rates per minute are 9 cents. I'd be willing to pay a bit extra (up front?) if it makes the process of getting set up quick and painless.

Thanks!

(*) Note, Verizon's S3 has been "crippled" so that it can't surf the net overseas, but only be used for voice and SMS. (They have disabled the APN menu, so I suppose it makes no sense for me to pay extra for a data packet).

Hi there,

I'm new to taking my phone abroad, so apologies for the very basic questions. Just after some tips please.

I'm taking an unlocked spare phone with me to Italy later this month to use for basic web surfing, looking at trip advisor, booking hotels etc. (I'm from the UK - just going for 10 days.)

I'll be driving into Italy from France.

Can I buy a prepaid SIM in advance (in the UK) just for peace of mind? Any suggestions where from please?

If it is better to wait until I get to Italy, where should i head? Do I need a Code Fiscale thingy?

Thanks for any help and advice!

WIND & TIM @ Roma Termini

I recently spent two days in Rome and purchased both a WIND and TIM card at Termini train station. I chose to get both as a learning experience,...

I recently spent two days in Rome and purchased both a WIND and TIM card at Termini train station. I chose to get both as a learning experience, having used Vodafone once in the past. Here are my observations...

WIND has a store both on the main level and on the lower level. I used the lower level. TIM store was upstairs. The station also had a Vodafone and a "3" store.

TIM store has a touch screen to the left of the entrance door, which dispenses a customer queue number. You proceed to the counter when called.

Both requested passport; I provided both passport and codice fiscale (because I have one).

I described my request the same way in both places: "I want to use the internet and call the USA."

The package TIM gave me cost 13 euro, from which 3 euro paid for a data plan of 300MB per week, and 5 euro credit. Calls to USA were 20 euro cents.

The package WIND gave me cost 10 euro with 5 euro credit. Internet was unlimited but cost 2 euro per day if and when I chose to use it. Calls to USA were 20 euro cents.

TIM said the card would be activated before I left the store, and it was.
WIND said the card would take 1-3 hours, and since I was using TIM, I did not care when it activated. It was certainly activated by the next day when I wanted to use it.

Both stores spoke English adequately, but some of my questions were too complicated, so I got very abbreviated "yes/no" answers, such as
- I could not use the phone to change the opzioni / offerta
- the opzioni would auto-renew
- I could not use the android app to manage my account
- I could not change the language of SMS or voice menus
- I could not use the phone to check my usage
Both said that any unused credit would die after one year, and only a recharge would keep the credit. (This differs from other countries, where incurring a billable event will extend the life and credit of the SIM??) Can someone clarify and elaborate on this?

No harm done, it's hard to speak another language, and both stores were packed wall to wall with customers. I determined to register both SIMS on the respective websites to read more about what I had just purchased. Neither gave me the SIM card packaging - I probably could have read more about the starting options and features myself.

I registered both cards on the website. I discovered that the WIND android app can indeed manage the account (after website registration). I could not find a TIM android app.

I discovered that the TIM limit of 300MB can be surpassed within the week, but at a reduced rate of 32kbps, and that another 300MB can be purchased by SMS before the week expires. My best understanding of Italian leads me to believe that this will not auto-renew if I don't establish an internet connection from the phone, but if I do, it will cost 3 euro with a new week starting at the moment of connection, thereby constituting an "auto-renew". If no one on this forum clarifies this, I shall know in a few days if this auto-renews without establishing an internet connection, as I have left Italy. I also learned from the website that I get a free SMS after each call telling me the cost and my new credit limit. After all of these discoveries, I shamefully realized that I had received an SMS describing each of these options when I first activated the SIM, but did not pay attention to them.

I discovered that the WIND package they gave me was WIND 12. Don't know why this was the default package they gave me (maybe because I was staying too short to benefit from the all-inclusive plans), but at least I know what it is and that I can change it on the website. I don't see how this option can auto-renew if I don't use it, since it's a "per-day" rate when in use.

I did speed tests on both cards. The TIM data rate was a 60 kbps, the WIND data rate was 740 kbps, both painfully slow.

I would appreciate clarification regarding both stores saying that only a recharge will keep the SIM credit beyond one year.

Apparently, Truphone is replacing everyone's SIM cards.
Some people have received unrequested replacement SIMs in the mail. Others after talking to Truphone CS. Supposedly the replacement SIM works 'better'. It is Version 5.00.
I just received one today. You need to call Truphone CS to do the change, not the web site.

Both AT&T and T-Mobile networks still work. The replacement SIM is a mini with a micro residing in it and can be pushed out.

How they are communicating it to customers is unclear. I got mine in the mail 3 days after talking to CS.

Last week I went on a trip to Gibraltar, Spain, France and Italy and got to play a bit with Piranha, Telna and Mobal as well as my home carrier Sprint (have a world phone from them).

Sprint and Mobal worked everywhere. Only had some issues with Piranha and Telna. Piranha and Telna worked great in Spain, Gibraltar and Rome. Could not register on any network in France, Florence and Pisa (both Piranha and Telna). Not quite sure what the issue was as when I got to Rome, the Piranha SIM registered right up to TIM... It would not do that in Florence or Pisa... I did not try the Telna SIM while in Rome...

I'm trying to pull down the call activity that I did have with Piranha, but their website seems to be having issues with getting my SIM data at the moment...

As it has been said on other posts, 'Always take a spare SIM'...

Having let my Ortel SIM expire and having my Solomo SIM join my collection of SIM's from bankrupt carriers, I now need a new SIM card. In the past I have only needed voice communications and that remains my primary concern, but if data rates have become very affordable, I might be interested in data this time.

I travel to the EU from the USA, my base of operation in the EU is Germany, but I always travel to several other countries in the EU during my visits. I visit a couple of times a year and stay for two or three weeks each visit. I carry a laptop and need Internet, which I usually have included in my accommodations, but it has sometimes been inconveniently absent on the road, although I can always find wireless in a cafe in any business district, thus I am not willing to pay much for data.

This is my first visit since Solomo went belly up. I will be visiting Germany and Bulgaria (Sunny Beach area) on this trip and so my current interest is mainly for communications in these countries.

My calling pattern is mostly incoming calls from the USA and I originate very few calls. When I originate a call it is to numbers in the locality where I am staying or to Germany and the USA. I absolutely need to have reliable communications. I am required to be available 24/7 wherever I go, so an unreliable network is a no go. In the past I have carried two phones on two carriers to insure I am available. I am not sure that is still necessary, but I can do that if needed.

I am looking for advice on the best card to get for my usage as described above. Thank you!

I need an international sim card with free incoming calls, I don't care about the call rates because I seldom call.

I was thinking of the Air Baltic card, it's a great card, it expires after 2 years which is awesome, cheap rates, free incoming calls, only 10 € P&P included, yet the number I get is a +372 from Estonia and call rates from my home country to Estonia are expensive, even with VOIP (I'm using freevoipdeal.com which is 0.08 € per minute to mobile numbers)

Instead, freevoipdeal calls to UK mobiles are only 0.01 € per minute.

Is there an international sim card with at least 1 year expiration if not used and a UK number (or at least a central europe number or a US number) and free incoming calls for no more than 15 € ?
