I will travel in Italy for about 10 days, and I need a prepaid sim card just for data.
Just went over the sticky and previous Italy threads, I think I have everything understood.

One small issue though:
When I first started to use my phone for data in my home country, I had to send a SMS in order to get all the internet access points configured.
Is there a similar procedure I need to do in Italy? or should it be configured manually (and if yes, how do I do it in a Symbian 9.5 based Nokia phone)?

Hello,

Does anybody know if it is possible for a short time visitor to buy a prepaid SIM for voice + data in Sweden? If yes, which operator/package do you recommend? No big volumes of data, maybe up to 500 MB is more than enough.

Regards,

1. I understand that users in the EU can now roam on each others networks at reasonable rates.
2. It wasn't too many years ago that users in the U.S. paid a lot of money just to roam outside their local area. You paid a lot for long distance just within the U.S. Now, users in the U.S. can go anywhere within the country and call anywhere within the country FREE. Unlimited cell calling in the U.S. is less than $100. (In the U.S., cell phones work like land lines, no extra charges to call a cell phone.)
I think, sometime in the near future, roaming between countries will be seamless. Many companies already own stakes in several countries (Vodafone, TMobile et al). We can already use 3rd party routing to call from country to country for only a few cents (pesos, sheckels).
3. There is now a service from Sprint in the U.S. where you can get unlimited data via wifi over their 3G network. You get a small "wifi card" (a little bigger than a pack of cigarettes) and can connect up to 5 devices to its wifi signal as long as they are within 10 meters. Seems to me you could make use of that to make voice calls. No contract is required. You can just pay for it for the months you need service. Seems to me visitors from overseas could make good use of this.
4. We just returned from 2 weeks in Argentina, Brazil and Uraguay. We made good use of T-Mobile (U.S.) UMA feature that allows you to make calls just as though you were standing in the U.S. Rogers, Canada has the same feature. (I think a couple countries overseas have this.) With wifi getting almost universal (like all McDonalds<G>), roaming for free is quite easy. Expensive hotels still charge an extra high fee for accessing wifi, but moderate and lower end hotels have it for free. Many restaurants had free wifi.

Bottom line - I felt no need to get prepaid SIMS. I did pay TMobile the 66 cents/day for the 2 weeks to get/send unlimited email via our BlackBerrys. We also made use of the BB free message system to keep in touch if we got separated.

For visitors to the U.S. = look into Sprint's unlimited data service. Also, T-Mobile has unlimited prepaid calling for $40/mo. That, with GoogleVoice would let you call home for 2-3 cents/min. to most first world landlines.

Starting November 15th 2010 all per KB rates will cease to exist for old and new Wind customers! :nono:

Starting from that date the only rate available for data (web) will be the time billed one, the horrible € 0.50/15 minutes (billed at 15 minutes increments).
No news about roaming rates, let's hope they will keep the actual, per KB, ones.

Also all old MEGA options will decease.
Mega1500 users will automatically migrate to Internet No Stop
Mega No Limit and Mega 15000 users will automatically migrate to Mega Unlimited.

So the only 2 data offers available will be:
- Internet No Stop: 9€/month, 1GB at full band (then 32kbps limitation applies)
- Mega Unlimited: 20€/month, 10GB at full band (then 32kbps limitation applies)

Time billed options will probably still be available, but they are already of no use.

Mr. Sawiris has a gift for extracting profits from the world’s most volatile telecom markets. His wireless company is the largest taxpayer in unstable Pakistan.
A few years ago I purchased a new but activated UZO PAYT sim card on ebay to use while on holiday in Portugal. As I am off to Portugal again I checked on ebay without success to purchase another. I have googled and there are none to be found. I suppose like Italy and Spain due to new laws you now have to purchase and register a sim with various proof of ID in the country.

Can anyone tell me how easy or difficult is is for a non resident to purchase a PAYT sim?

Thanks.

Hello everyone. I'm in Germany currently and I'm having a little trouble with the aldi sim I bought.

I registered as a new customer on the median mobile site. I put down my hotel name as the address and put down the sim number and mobile phone number. I was then taken to a page where it told me my customer number and order number. It said something about waiting six hours and it had 2 links. No idea what they meant. My german is really appalling. I'm just wondering if my sim is registered now? I'm sure I've done something wrong I've not had chance to check it yet.

I've had no email and I thought it would ask me what tariff I would like to go on. Has anyone here got any clue about the registration process? I'll try the sim later but I thought I'd ask now. Just found a free wireless access point!

Thanks!
