Default UM in Tahiti/French Polynesia? - 07-07-2007, 14:58

Hey gang-

We will be in Tahiti next month and wondered if anyone has had a chance to try out United Mobile there? French Polynesia is not listed on their site, but hoping perhaps their France agreement might cover it! Thanks!

I wouldn't count on it. Take a look at the comparison chart in the "Sticky" section. Everyone has roaming in France, only one (CelTrek) has roaming in Tahiti besides ATT at 2.29 and T-M for 2.99. CelTrek is quoted at 39/54 incoming/outgoing.
None of these rates are close to what they are in France. American Samoa has no relationship to U.S. roaming as a comparison.

Primarily uses my grandfathered U.S. T-M phone when traveling - 29¢/min. incoming in many countries. [Had to give this up last year when I changed plans.]
Now also make usee of T-M's UMA/wifi free calling from any place in the world w. access to wifi. Wife uses BB 8900, I use BB 9700, both UMA capable.
U.S. T-Mobile unlimited minutes - $40/mo. BB is $20 extra + $5 for SMS.

09 appears to be working in French Polynesia, with 0.29 euros incoming per minute.

You might want to consider Skype-Out via Wi-Fi connection (small PDA or wifi device) from a coffee shop or if your hotel offers it....would only be about 2 cents a minute back to US. Another alternative would be a local Vini prepaid sim card (900 Mhz GSM) but international rates are close to $2/minute so best paired with a callback service.
