Nagorno-Karabakh is a region of Azerbaijan that has declared itself independent as the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh (NKR). It is in the South Caucasus, about 270 kilometres (about 170 mi.) west of the Azerbaijani capital Baku. The region is predominantly ethnic Armenian and is under ethnic Armenian military control. The local Armenian population declared independence from Azerbaijan December 10, 1991. The NKR's sovereign status is not recognized by any country or international organization in the world. Armenia and Azerbaijan have been holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group, where, among other issues, the future status of the region is being discussed.
Today, Nagorno-Karabakh is a de facto independent state, calling itself the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic It is closely tied to the Republic of Armenia and uses the currency of the latter, the dram.
Talking about mobile phone operators, NKR has its own operator, Karabakh Telecom, which is the only one with coverage in this autonomous region.
