Abkhazia

abkhazia

(from Wikipedia) Abkhazia is a de facto independent republic which is officially part of Georgia. It is located on the eastern coast of the Black Sea, bordering the Russian Federation to the north. Within the internationally recognised borders of Georgia, Abkhazia borders the provinces of Mingrelia and Svaneti to the east. Abkhazia's independence is not recognized by any international organization or country and it is recognised as an autonomous republic of Georgia, with Sukhumi as its capital.

Talking about GSM networks, Abkhazia is not covered by any of the 3 Georgian operators, but it has two GSM network operators, not recognised by the GSM association, but working and with some roaming agreements as well. The main operator is Aquafon (owned by Russian Megafon at 50%) which runs a GSM 900 network with the best coverage of the country and about 55k subscribers. In 2006 a second operator started its service: it's called A-Mobile and it's improving its coverage, expecially in the northern region at the border with Russia. No coverage should be available in the south at the still not so safe border with Georgia. Currently, the number of subscribers is close to 15k. For the first time on the Abkhaz market the company proposed corporate cellular tariffs.
Both operators have no website so it's not possible to list here their offers, we just know that A-Mobile should have some tariffs with no monthly fee, while Aquafon should be a bit more expensive.
